Limitbit Introduces Doly, an AI-powered desktop CompanionDriven by Open Hardware, Open Design, and Raspberry Pi, Along with Skill Development Tools

Doly intends to be a portable companion with features including object identification, natural language speech recognition, and a learning personality.

With only three minutes of operation, Limitbit Tech's crowdfunding campaign for Doly, a companion bot for education and other purposes powered by a Raspberry Pi, has successfully reached its funding target.

Doly offers users of all ages and skill levels an interesting and instructive experience because of its unique ability to expand and adapt. About the expressive tracked robot, Limitbit creator Levent Erenler states, "Our commitment to an open source approach places Doly at the cutting edge of personal robotic technology," characterizing Doly as a "fusion of companionship, education, and technological innovation.

Doly was initially intended to be a 3D-printable companion robot, powered by a proprietary Linux-based computing platform. Limitbit, however, decided to use the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 to provide greater capabilities. In response to the maker community's curiosity, the firm released the machine's design under an open-source license.

The eight-megapixel Sony IMX219-based camera module, two touch sensors situated above two circular displays serving as the robot's expressive "eyes," a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), two time-of-flight (ToF) distance sensors, four infrared edge sensors, two microphones, six general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins, two spare servo ports, and a single Qwiic port for connecting to external add-ons are all included in the current Doly design.

By providing software that offers a variety of on-device machine learning capabilities, including face, speech, and object identification, natural language understanding (NLU) replies to instructions and autonomous pathfinding, Limitbit is maximizing the robot's artificial intelligence. There's also a low-code visual programming environment built on Google Blockly for individuals who want to extend its features.

The business also states that the robot will have a changeable personality in its basic firmware setup. "Doly's cutting-edge technology allows him to feel, react, and have a distinct personality. You will be shaping his unique personality and disposition from the very beginning," explains Erenler.

The way you engage and treat your Doly will shape this feature. His reactions, facial expressions, body language, and eye movements will therefore change to reflect various moods. Doly exists independently and doesn't need any apps or gadgets.

Doly is now seeking funds on Kickstarter. The kit, which costs CA$362 (about $270) and needs 3D-printed body pieces and a Raspberry Pi CM4, is available for CA$399 (roughly $296) for early-bird supporters who want a fully-assembled item. The business has said that all hardware is anticipated to arrive in August of this year.
